Our Story

Joe didn't set out to become a sapphire sorter. Growing up, he could see the Sapphire Mountains from his own front porch, and for years he would stare at that rugged skyline, never knowing, never once imagining, that the stones buried beneath it would one day become his life's work and his greatest passion. He's a maker at heart, and everything he has ever built, he built with his hands and his heart, exactly like the work he does now. He's welded fire pokers that are still sold today at the Gem Mountain gift shop, shaped bee's-nest artwork out of steel, made fishing lure accessories by hand, and knitted hats to give away to a local Montana charity.

Life didn't always run smooth for Joe. He's weathered some hard chapters and come through them the honest way, by working hard, staying diligent, and never giving up hope. True grit. So when the opportunity came to sort Montana sapphire concentrate from Rock Creek, something clicked. The work made sense to him. The stones made sense to him too, the way they come off the screen raw, then reveal a whole spectrum of color once they're washed and picked, every shade of the rainbow scattered across the table, each one with its own brilliance. This was the road he chose, and he has made the very best of it. How Joe works

Joe makes the trip to the mines near Philipsburg and Helena nearly every day they're open. He shakes grit right on site, where he's become something of a local legend for his happy-go-lucky attitude and his willingness to help anyone around him while never slowing his own pace. His tools are simple: a sifting screen, troughs of water, a table, tweezers, and a lamp on cloudy days. He buys Montana sapphire concentrate from both Rock Creek and Missouri River deposits, the same public opportunity the mines offer anyone. The difference is that Joe has become a master at it and is relentlessly diligent. He runs the heavy material through the screen and shakes it just so, letting gravity do the work. As Joe likes to say, "The sapphires will sort themselves if you shake 'em just right." Then he hand-picks the keepers by eye, one at a time. It's slow, back-breaking work, rain or shine, and the season only lasts a few months, so he's out there every day he can be. A full day of sorting might yield only thirty or forty loose Montana sapphires worth keeping, each one genuine and unique, found and chosen by hand, by a true grit kicker.

Built on trust

Over several years, Joe has built real relationships with the mine owners, the crews, and the locals, some of whom have become like family to him. He earned that standing the right way: by showing up every day, working hard, lending a hand, sharing a laugh, and being someone the good people who run these mines trust to do things properly. That trust is why they're glad to work with him, and why he can buy concentrate straight from the source and put in the work to recover the stones himself.
